Today’s topic is not for the faint of heart. Brace yourselves, as we are going to talk about something that very few of us want to think about – keeping organized! But keep organized we must, especially if we don’t have much experience growing or are growing a large number of plants at once. So join us on this journey, as we provide you with some helpful tips to ensure your grow operation functions like a well-oiled machine.
-
Write it down
It’s easy to forget things when you have so many of them to keep track of! To make sure your plants stay healthy you have to remember when to feed and water them, what nutrient mix to use at what stage of their grow cycle and much more. You will also want to recall when you cloned your plants, when your plants started flowering and when you started harvesting them. All of this can be forgotten easily unless you record this information in some way (because, let’s be honest, memory retention is one of the things cannabis can’t help us improve). Whether you prefer to use a journal, a phone or a lap top, being able to easily find and recall information is one of the best ways to keep organized and stay on top of your grow.
-
Plan it out
There is an old proverb that says: “measure twice, cut once” and it can be applied to your grow as well. Before you start your grow, you should consider (among many other things) the layout of your grow area, what equipment you are going to use and how long it will likely take for your plants to be ready for harvest. Come up with rough timelines for each grow stage and make a schedule (a calendar helps). Devising a detailed plan will go a long way towards keeping you organized and on track, so that you’re not left scrambling once your plants start growing.
-
Find a home for your equipment
It is easy to misplace and lose things if they don’t have a “home”. Keeping your grow organized involves finding an easily accessible place to store your equipment, accessories and other materials, and then actually putting those items away in their proper place. Going about your daily tasks will be much easier if you don’t have to waste time trying to locate what you need. After all, there are few things as annoying as spending more time looking for the right scissors than pruning your plants.
-
Get into a routine
As with anything else, keeping organized becomes much easier to do when you turn it into a routine. Once you get into a habit of doing certain things, they become instinctive and don’t require as much effort. Get into the routine of putting away your tools as soon as you’re done using them. Make it a point to do a thorough clean of your grow area at least once a week (pick a day of the week on which you will do this and stick to it). Being used to structured tasks will help you keep more organized and efficient with your time.
